Puzzle Tips
- • Word values might equal coordinate digits
- • Look for words with significant values (100, 77, etc.)
- • Multiple words might spell out a number
- • Digital roots reduce to single digits (useful for formulas)
What is Word Value?
Word value (also called gematria in Hebrew or isopsephy in Greek) is the sum of letter values in a word, where A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on to Z=26. This technique is commonly used in puzzles and numerology.
How to Calculate
- Convert each letter to its position in the alphabet (A=1, Z=26)
- Add all the values together
- The result is the word's value
Example
HELLO = 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52
Word Value in Geocaching
Word values are extremely common in geocaching puzzles:
- Direct coordinates: Word values become coordinate digits
- Equation solving: "N XX° YY.ABC where ABC = value of WORD"
- Pattern finding: Related words with same values
- Checksum verification: Value confirms correct answer

Digital Root
The digital root is found by repeatedly summing digits until you get a single digit. Example: 52 → 5+2 = 7
Word Product
Instead of adding, multiply all letter values together. Example: CAT = 3 × 1 × 20 = 60
Notable Word Values
- 100: GEOCACHE, PROBLEM
- 74: JESUS, LUCIFER
- 52: GOD, DEVIL
- 72: CACHE
Tips for Puzzles
- Look for words that might have coordinate-friendly values
- Check if multiple words have the same value (might be significant)
- The digital root is useful for single-digit answers
- Sometimes the product, not sum, is needed
