NATO Phonetic Alphabet

The NATO phonetic alphabet (also called the ICAO alphabet) is an international standard for spelling out letters clearly over voice communication. Each letter has a unique code word.

History

Adopted by NATO in 1956, this alphabet was developed to reduce errors in voice communication, especially in noisy environments like aircraft cockpits and military operations.

Usage

Used by military, aviation, maritime, emergency services, and amateur radio operators worldwide to spell out critical information clearly.

Note on Spelling

Official NATO spelling uses "Alfa" (not Alpha) and "Juliett" (not Juliet) to avoid pronunciation ambiguity in non-English speaking countries. "Niner" is used for 9 to avoid confusion with German "nein" (no).
