What is MGRS?

The Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) is a geocoordinate standard used by NATO militaries. It provides a way to reference locations using alphanumeric codes.

MGRS Format

An MGRS coordinate consists of:

  • Grid Zone Designator: UTM zone + latitude band (e.g., 18S)
  • 100km Square ID: Two-letter identifier (e.g., UJ)
  • Numerical Location: Easting and northing within the square

MGRS in Geocaching

MGRS coordinates appear in military-themed puzzles and challenges:

  • Military history caches
  • NATO/defense themed puzzles
  • Coordinate conversion challenges
  • Multi-format waypoint puzzles

Relation to UTM

MGRS is based on the UTM coordinate system but adds the 100km square identification for easier communication and reduced ambiguity.
