Color Code Converter
Convert colors between HEX, RGB, HSL, CMYK, and decimal formats. Useful for decoding color-based puzzles.
Common Color Values
Puzzle Applications
- • RGB values can encode coordinates (R=lat degrees, G=minutes, B=seconds)
- • HEX codes contain hidden numbers (4A = 74, 7C = 124)
- • Decimal color values may be direct coordinate components
- • Color sequences can spell words using first letters
Color Code Formats
Colors can be represented in many different formats, each useful for different applications and puzzles.
HEX Colors
Hexadecimal color codes use 6 digits (e.g., #FF5733) representing red, green, and blue values from 00-FF (0-255). This is the most common web format.
RGB
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) uses three decimal numbers from 0-255. This format directly represents how screens display colors by mixing light.
HSL
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) is more intuitive for humans:
- Hue: Color angle (0-360°) on the color wheel
- Saturation: Color intensity (0-100%)
- Lightness: Brightness (0-100%)
CMYK
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is used for printing. It's a subtractive color model, unlike the additive RGB.
Colors in Geocaching
Color codes appear in puzzles in various ways:
- Direct encoding: RGB values as coordinate parts
- Hex extraction: Numbers hidden in hex codes
- Color names: First letters spelling messages
- Resistor colors: Using color-to-digit mapping
