Online Puzzles

Solved entirely from the cache listing

What is an Online Puzzle?

Online puzzles are geocaching mystery caches where the entire puzzle can be solved from home using only the information provided in the cache listing. Solvers decode ciphers, find hidden messages, or work through logical challenges to reveal the final coordinates.

These are the most common type of puzzle caches and are perfect for geocachers who enjoy armchair solving before heading out to make the find.

Key Characteristics

  • Self-contained: All information needed to solve is in the listing
  • No field visits required: Can be solved from anywhere with internet access
  • Tool-based: Often requires cipher decoders, converters, or analysis tools
  • Verifiable: Solution produces specific coordinates that can be checked

Common Techniques

Substitution Ciphers

Replace letters with other letters, numbers, or symbols. The encoded text maintains the structure of the original message.

Encoding Systems

Convert text to a different format or base. These are reversible transformations rather than true encryption.

Steganography

Hide messages within innocent-looking content. The puzzle is finding where the hidden message is, not just decoding it.

Polyalphabetic Ciphers

Use multiple cipher alphabets for increased security. Typically require a keyword to decode.

Example Online Puzzle

Cache description excerpt:

"The Romans knew how to keep secrets. Julius himself used a simple but effective method to protect his military communications. Take 13 steps back in time to find where X marks the spot."

ABEGU SVSG BAR QRTERRF

Solution breakdown:

  1. "Romans" and "Julius" hint at Caesar cipher
  2. "13 steps back" indicates ROT13 (shift of 13)
  3. Applying ROT13 to the ciphertext: NORTH FIFTY ONE DEGREES
  4. Combined with other clues, reveals the final coordinates

Tips for Creating Online Puzzles

  • 1Hint at the cipher type: Give solvers a fair chance by including thematic clues about what cipher you've used.
  • 2Test thoroughly: Have someone else solve your puzzle using only the listing information.
  • 3Provide a checker: Use a coordinate checker so solvers can verify their answer before travelling.
  • 4Match difficulty to rating: Simple Caesar = D1-2, Multi-layer or obscure = D4-5.
